Dental extractions & wisdom teeth

Impacted wisdom teeth can lead to pain, infection, cyst formation or damage to adjacent teeth. Early removal can avoid these problems, minimise risk of complications and optomise outcomes.

Following a comprehensive consultation and radiographic assessment, the surgeon will determine the most appropriate approach for tooth removal. Extractions may be indicated for wisdom teeth, unrestorable teeth, or dentition contributing to crowding, infection, cyst formation or periodontal compromise in order to protect adjacent teeth, nerves, and sinus structures.

When roots are in close proximity to critical anatomical structures such as the inferior alveolar nerve, CT imaging may be utilised to facilitate precise surgical planning and minimise procedural risk.

Surgeons at The Maxillofacial Surgeons are experienced, caring and gentle, and can provide surgery efficienctly and safely under local anaesthetic, IV sedation or general anaesthetic.

Procedures

  • Simple and complex surgical extractions
  • Wisdom teeth removal
  • Exposure of unerupted teeth
  • Frenectomy

Dental implants and bone grafting

Titanium dental implants can replace missing teeth to help restore form, function, your smile and confidence.

Dental implants and bone grafting procedures may be recommended when teeth are missing or damaged beyond repair. Dental implants are made from medical grade titanium alloys which are designed to replace the missing tooth. Once inserted, the surrounding bone fuses to the implant in a process called osseointegration. This process usually takes 3-4 months. You will then return to your restorative dentist where a custom tooth will be secured to the implant.

When there is insufficient bone to support implant placement, then grafting may be required to augment the bony foundation. These treatments help restore both function and appearance, improving comfort, confidence, and overall quality of life.

Using advanced digital planning and high-resolution CT imaging, each case is carefully mapped to ensure precise and safe implant placement. We use only the most evidence-based implant systems and grafting materials, supported by extensive research for long-term stability and success.

Our surgeons work closely with your general dental practitioner or specialist to plan and coordinate your treatment, ensuring seamless and comprehensive care from start to finish.

Procedures

  • Single-tooth and multiple implant placement
  • Full-arch implant solutions (All-on-X)
  • Zygomatic implants for severe maxillary atrophy
  • Subperiosteal implants
  • Ridge augmentation
  • Sinus lift

Orthognathic (corrective jaw) surgery

Jaw surgery is performed using 3D planning and custom plates to improve your bite, optomise your airway and provide facial balance, ultimately improving confidence and quality of life.

Orthognathic surgery or corrective jaw surgery is performed to correct skeletal and dental discrepancies that affect bite alignment, function, and facial balance. It may be recommended to improve chewing, speech, breathing, and facial aesthetics. This is usually a 1-2 year process that is undertaken in conjunction with your specialist Orthodontist.

At The Maxillofacial Surgeons – Mr. Edward Nguyen and Associates, we use state-of-the-art virtual surgical planning software that transforms traditional 2D planning into a fully interactive 3D process. This technology enhances accuracy, efficiency, and patient understanding throughout the surgical journey.

Customised surgery with patient-specific implants provide surgical precision and accuracy, reduces operative time significantly, and therefore optomises post-operative healing and recovery and ultimately the final outcome.

Mr Nguyen is always practising evidence based medicine, and challenging the norms. He is a proponent of minimally invasive surgery, and is one of a few in the world using modified custom plates to minimise tissue trauma.

We work closely with your orthodontist to coordinate every stage of care, ensuring the best functional and aesthetic results.

Procedures

  • Le Fort I osteotomy for maxillary discrepancies
  • Bilateral sagittal split osteotomy (BSSO) for mandibular discrepancies
  • Bimaxillary osteotomy (double jaw) surgery
  • Genioplasty
  • MMA (maxillo-mandibular advancement) surgery for obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA)

Oral, head and neck cancer

Early diagnosis and management of oral cancer leads to better survival outcomes.

Changes in the mouth or neck, such as persistent ulcers, red or white patches, lumps, or swellings should always be investigated, as early diagnosis offers the best outcomes.

Our surgeons perform biopsies on suspicious lesions to obtain a diagnosis, which will then guide management, Workup of head and neck cancer involves 3D imaging and presentation at a Head and Neck Multidisciplinary Meeting. Mr Nguyen is a leading member of the Austin Health MDM.

Surgery is the mainstay of managing oral cancer. This normally involves a wide local excision and often a neck dissection to remove potentially cancerous lymph node tissue which may have spread to the neck. Patients may also require adjuvant radiotherapy and chemotherapy.

Complex or advanced cases are often best managed in a tertiary hospital such as Austin Health, where there is multidisciplinary support from other surgical specialties, allied health staff including speech pathology, dieticians, physiotherapists and nurses.

Procedures

  • Incisional and excisional biopsies
  • Partial glossectomy, mandibulectomy, maxillectomy
  • Elective or therapeutic neck dissection

Salivary gland pathology

Tumours and stones are common causes for pain, swelling, infection or numbness of the salivary glands.

Swelling, pain, or persistent dryness inthe salivary glands may indicate obstruction, infection, or tumours. Early assessment and treatment are essential to relieve symptoms, prevent complications. This often involves ultrasound, CT and an ultrasound guided biopsy.

Mr Nguyen specialises in excision of the submandibular gland and parotidectomy for tumours and stones. Majority of parotid tumours are benign, but there is significant risk of malignant transformation if left over time. The parotidectomy is a technically challenging surgery with risk to the facial nerve which controls movement of the face. This surgery therefore, requires experience, care and use of adjuncts such as facial nerve monitoring.

Prcoedures

  • Submandibular and sublingual gland excision
  • Ranula or mucocele excision
  • Parotidectomy with nerve monitoring

Facial trauma

Our surgeons treat fractures, lacerations and soft-tissue injuries with micro-plate fixation and scar-minimising techniques that restore both form and function.

Facial trauma requires prompt, specialised care to manage the airway, protect vital structures, and restore both function and appearance. Our experienced surgical team is skilled in treating complex injuries, allowing for accurate, efficient, and safe repair, minimising long-term complications and optimising recovery.

Early intervention and meticulous planning are key to achieving the best outcomes for both aesthetics and function, helping patients regain confidence and quality of life after injury.

Complex injuries are often best managed in a tertiary hospital setting - and this can often be coordinated through The Austin Health.

Prcoedures

 • Mandibular fractures
• Orbital floor fractures

• Zygomatic-complex(cheekbone) fracture repair
• Nasal bone reduction
• Dento-alveolar fractures
• Soft-tissue laceration closure
• Post-trauma implant or graft reconstruction
